So the unthinkable happened this week in New Orleans. We experienced a legit snow. I mean snow snow! The kind of snow that we would have to travel to even experience to be able to see we know what snow looks like. We were able to have snowball fights and connect with water and Mother Nature on such a deep level. Let me tell you, two days of frolicking in the snow with my family have left me feeling alive, inspired, and deeply connected. As I warmed up with a cup of tea afterward, I couldn't stop thinking about how the cold can profoundly impact our nervous system—and not just on a physical level, but mentally and spiritually as well. This inspiration has led me to take the next step: exploring the world of cold plunging.
In this post, I want to share the incredible benefits of embracing the cold, whether it’s through snow play or intentional practices like cold plunging. We'll explore how the cold can transform our nervous system and promote holistic healing for the mind, body, and soul.
The Cold as a Natural Healer
Cold exposure isn’t just a trendy wellness hack—it’s a practice rooted in nature and ancient traditions. Humans have always lived in harmony with the elements, and our ancestors understood the therapeutic benefits of cold water and winter air. Today, science is catching up with what has long been known: the cold is a powerful tool for healing and transformation.
The Science of Cold Exposure
Before diving into the spiritual and mental benefits, let’s explore the physical and neurological effects of cold exposure:
1. Activation of the Vagus Nerve
The vagus nerve is a critical component of our parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for calming the body and restoring balance. Cold exposure, whether through playing in the snow or submerging in icy water, stimulates the vagus nerve. This activation helps reduce stress, improve digestion, and support emotional regulation.
2. Improved Circulation
The cold causes blood vessels to constrict, which boosts circulation as the body works to warm itself. Over time, regular exposure strengthens the cardiovascular system and improves overall blood flow.
3. Reduction in Inflammation
Cold exposure is known to reduce inflammation and pain, which is why athletes often use ice baths after intense workouts. This benefit extends to chronic inflammation, making it a valuable tool for those managing conditions like arthritis or autoimmune disorders.
4. Increased Endorphins
Cold exposure triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. This explains the post-plunge euphoria or the sense of joy that comes from snowball fights or making snow angels.
I experienced making my first snow angel and the immediate joy and satisfaction that came to me was indescribable.
The Mental Benefits of Cold Exposure
1. Stress Resilience
Experiencing the cold teaches the nervous system how to manage stress. When we expose ourselves to cold temperatures, our initial response might be panic or discomfort. However, as we learn to breathe through it, our body adapts, and we build resilience—not just to cold but to stress in general.
2. Mental Clarity
There’s something about the crispness of winter air or the jolt of a cold plunge that clears mental fog. The increased oxygen uptake and endorphin release can enhance focus, creativity, and decision-making.
3. Mood Boosting
Cold exposure has been linked to the production of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine, which are essential for mood regulation. This is why activities like snow play or cold plunging can leave you feeling refreshed and optimistic.
4. Mindfulness and Presence
It’s hard to think about anything else when you’re immersed in freezing water or feeling snowflakes on your skin. Cold exposure demands presence, pulling you out of your mind and into the now.

The Spiritual Connection to Cold
As I began to explore even more how playing in the cold weather it's in the snow or a goof ole cold plunge, I began to wonder what spiritual components can be healed within us during this interaction as well. For many, cold exposure becomes a spiritual practice through connecting us to our inner strength, the rhythms of nature, and something greater than ourselves.
Here’s how:
1. Connecting to the Element of Water
Water is a powerful spiritual element associated with emotions, intuition, and cleansing. Immersing yourself in cold water can feel like a baptism, washing away negative energy and bringing renewal.
2. Surrender and Trust
The cold teaches us to let go of resistance. By surrendering to the experience, we cultivate trust—in ourselves, in our breath, and in the natural process of adaptation. This surrender can mirror spiritual practices like meditation or prayer.
3. Grounding Through Nature
Playing in the snow or plunging into a cold lake brings us back to the earth. The cold reconnects us to the natural world and reminds us of our place within it, fostering gratitude and grounding.
4. Awakening Inner Strength
The cold challenges us physically, but it’s often the mental and spiritual strength we discover that leaves the deepest impression. Facing the cold can feel like facing our fears, empowering us to grow and evolve.
Snow Play as a Gateway to Cold Therapy
For those of us new to cold exposure, playing in the snow is an excellent introduction.
Here’s why:
1. Low-Pressure Exposure
Snow play feels natural and fun, making it less intimidating than an icy plunge. Whether you’re sledding, building a snowman, or simply walking in the snow, your body gets acclimated to the cold gradually.
2. Bonding
Engaging in snow activities with loved ones adds an element of joy and connection, which amplifies the mood-boosting benefits of cold exposure. Watching my boys become enthralled with the snow is something I will never forget. Seeing them run, build, create, and want me there with them in every moment brought us closer in such a fun way.
3. Natural Movement
Physical activities in the snow—like throwing snowballs or making snow angels—keep the body warm while still offering the benefits of cold exposure.

Cold Plunging: Taking the Next Step
If snow play has sparked your interest in cold exposure, cold plunging might be the perfect next step. Here’s how to get started:
1. Start Gradually
Begin with cold showers, slowly lowering the temperature over time. This helps your body adapt to the cold without feeling overwhelmed.
2. Focus on Your Breath
Breathing is key to managing the initial shock of the cold. Practice slow, deep breaths to stay calm and present.
3. Choose Your Setting
Whether it’s a cold plunge pool, a natural body of water, or even a bathtub filled with ice, find a space where you feel safe and comfortable.
4. Set an Intention
Treat each plunge as a ritual. Set an intention for what you want to release or invite into your life. This transforms the experience into a spiritual practice.
5. Listen to Your Body
Cold plunging should feel challenging but not dangerous. Pay attention to your body’s signals and respect your limits.
Cold Therapy in Daily Life
Both snow play and cold plunging can be integrated into a holistic lifestyle.
Here are some tips for making the most of cold therapy:
Pair It with Meditation: Use the cold as an opportunity to practice mindfulness and deepen your connection to the present moment.
Journal Your Experience: Reflect on how you feel before and after cold exposure. This can help you track your progress and notice patterns in your emotional and physical well-being.
Incorporate Warm Rituals: Balance the cold with nourishing practices like warm baths, herbal teas, or cozy blankets to create a sense of harmony.
A Holistic Approach to Nervous System Healing
Cold exposure is a powerful tool, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle.
To support your nervous system holistically, consider combining cold therapy with:
Regular Movement: Dance, yoga, or even walking can complement the benefits of cold exposure.
Nourishing Foods: A diet rich in whole, anti-inflammatory foods supports overall nervous system health.
Spiritual Practices: Meditation, prayer, or energy work can deepen your connection to yourself and the world around you.
Embrace the Cold, Embrace Yourself
Whether it’s a snowball fight with your kids or a plunge into icy water, cold exposure has the potential to transform your nervous system and your life. Physically, it strengthens and heals. Mentally, it clears and uplifts. Spiritually, it connects and renews.
So the next time the snow falls or you’re near a body of cold water, take a deep breath and embrace the chill. Your nervous system—and your soul—will thank you.
